Description
This is a photograph of the end of French Canyon in Starved Rock State Park. Normally there would be a waterfall cascading down the wall, but due to the drought we are experiencing, no waterfall this time.
The canyons of Starved Rock State Park were formed by glacial meltwater and stream erosion. They sliced dramatically through tree-covered, sandstone bluffs for four miles at the park.
The park is best known for its fascinating rock formations, primary St. Peter sandstone, laid down in a huge shallow inland sea more than 425 million years ago and later brought to the surface.
