I photographed these six pelican cleaning themselves on the bank of the Rock River in Sterling, Illinois. It was really rare to se one of these birds this far north in the past, but we are beginning to see more and more of them. They are a lot of fun to watch and see them flying over the river in search of food.
It seams as though significant snow and ice that has persisted through the past few years gives the birds a stopping point staying here for a bit longer than normal during their migration, causing numbers of birds to increase, which makes them more conspicuous.
