Description
I took this macro shot of a common sparrow sitting on our front deck. He was just sitting soaking up the rays from the sun. The look on his face reminded me of something wondering when would spring come.
Sparrows inhabit cities in large numbers, so sparrows may be the most familiar of all wild birds. They are primarily seed-eaters, though they also consume small insects. Some sparrows will scavenge for food around cities and eat virtually anything that is small.
Generally, sparrows are small, plump, brown-grey birds with short tails and stubby, powerful beaks.
Sparrows are now found throughout North America, in every state of Australia except Western Australia, and over much of the heavily populated parts of South America.
The sparrows are some of the few passerine birds that engage in dust bathing. Sparrows will first scratch a hole in the ground with their feet, then lie in it and fling dirt or sand over their bodies with flicks of their wings. They will also bathe in water, or in dry or melting snow. Water bathing is similar to dust bathing, with the sparrow standing in shallow water and flicking water over its back with its wings, also ducking its head under the water. Both activities are social, with up to a hundred birds participating at once, and is followed by preening and sometimes group singing.
I hope you have enjoyed this macro of a sparrow and will share it with others. You can see more of my work on my homepage. Thank you for visiting and please come back as I add more work to my galleries.
