Description
This macro shot of a pair of blue Siberian Iris is just one of many growing in my flower beds.
Iris sibirica, the Siberian Iris or Siberian flag, is a species of flowering plant in the family Iridaceae, native to north east Turkey, Russia, eastern and central Europe. Growing 50120 cm (2047 in) tall, it is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial. The leaves are glaucous green, narrow and fairly rigid, blade-shaped, 4080 cm (1631 in) long and 24 cm broad. The flowers are typical of an iris, borne in late spring or early summer on unbranched or sparsely-branched stems held above the leaves, each flower 47 cm in diameter, mid- to purple-blue, often with a paler whitish or yellowish centre.
Iris is a genus of 260-300 species of flowering plants with showy flowers. It takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species, as well as, being the scientific name, iris is also very widely used as a common name for all Iris species, though some plants called thus belong to other closely related genera. A common name for some species is 'flags', while the plants of the subgenus Scorpiris are widely known as 'junos', particularly in horticulture. It is a popular garden flower.
