This photograph of a male oriole was taken this spring. This oriole was feeding on some grape jelly I had put out on my front deck. It seems that the orioles are attracted to the scent and sweetness of the jelly. This is the 2nd year that the orioles have returned. We have had seven that have been here for the last few days. They are a beautiful bird.
The Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula) is a small icterid blackbird that commonly occurs in eastern North America as a migratory breeding bird. This bird received its name from the fact that the male's colors resemble those on the coat-of-arms of Lord Baltimore. Like all icterids called "orioles", it is named after an unrelated, physically similar family found in the Old World: the Oriolidae. At one time, this species and the Bullock's Oriole, Icterus bullockii, were considered to be a single species called the Northern Oriole.

Hello my name is Bruce Bley. I am a retired art instructor. I taught in a public high school for 35 years. I enjoyed teaching students and helping them develop their own style of work.
